Greetings

August 8, 2011

This blog is a portfolio of my work. Most of the material will be published content, with possibly a few entries about writing, creativity and so on.

I’ll share a few details about myself, though I have to admit, I find I’d rather write about someone or something else. I’ve tried to blogging route, but I do so much writing and digging around for events, news, and other tidbits, I probably could very easily write a 1000 words a day in blog posts, but I don’t. Whenever I think of blogging, I can’t help think about Erica Jong’s comment. “Blogging is vanity. Like loving the smell of your own farts.” Ew. I know. And not every blog is like that, but some do feel that way …

But enough of that. A bit of background: School-wise, I have a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature (insert your own “Would you like fries with that?” joke here). My mother still rolls her eyes at that choice, but I don’t regret it. I love to read, and I love to write, so it feels right to me.

I have worked in publishing, whether it’s old fashioned newsprint (which sadly seems to be going the way of the dodo) as well as in online publishing. I started out in newspapers, writing and reporting, plus paginating and doing a bit of page design. I have samples of some of the design and writing work on this blog. I enjoyed writing the stories and designing the pages, and hopefully it shows.

After getting laid off a few years back I went more in the direction of writing. My writings have appeared in The Macomb Daily and Oakland Press newspapers, in Ambassador magazine, and the Detroiter, a publication of the Detroit Regional Chamber. I also work for Patch, a hyper-local news site. I am part time there, handling calendar and event editing duties (I like to call it the hunt for happenings) plus doing some features and the odd news story.

The stories shared here are ones I am proud to have written. They are stories I enjoyed having the opportunity to tell. In all of them there is something I love or loved, whether it was the chance to interview a lively actress or comedian, or it was a chance to learn something new and share it with readers.

I hope you like what you see and what you read.
